Jack Tait
It is with much regret we record the passing of one of our most respected players and assistant managers, Jack Tait, aged 63. Jack first joined South under Peter Rutherford in the mid 1970's alongside Russ Perkins. Jack (home name John but to us forever Jack) was a rugged centre back who hailed from Wigan and he delivered always resilient performances. He would return as assistant manager with Russ Perkins and led South in the NPL for two happy years. His most fondly remenbered moment was when we travelled to top of the table Witton Albion with Russ away on school business Jack was centre back and manager and determined to show his mettle pulled off a superb defensive action to record a thoroughly deserved and dogged 0-0 draw. It would do no harm as Witton soon acknowledged the managerial prowess then installed at South. However Jack would remain immensely popular with all those who had witnessed his performances. For those of us lucky enough to share his company and know his marveloous personality it was indeed a bonus.
All at South pass on our sincere condolences to his family, he will always be fondly remembered at South and forever much respected. We are the better for having shared his company.
